Confidence that “Nose” No Bounds
Nose reshaping, also called rhinoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgeries performed today. The reasons for choosing this surgery are numerous, however, and range from cosmetic reasons and birth defects to helping improve the way you breathe. Perhaps you are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose and want it to be more proportionate to the rest of your face. Maybe you want to change the span of your nostrils or the angle between your nose and upper lip. Or maybe you’ve experienced an injury, and your nose no longer looks like yours. Whatever your reason, the surgeons at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery of Illinois are ready to present you with options and talk about how we can help you achieve the look you want.
Types of Nose Surgery
There are two ways nose surgery can be performed: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty modifies the structure of the nose using internal incisions. Open rhinoplasty requires an additional incision at the base of the nose between the nostrils.
What to Expect from Nose Surgery
Prior to surgery, you and your physician will talk about your desired results and what the best course is for achieving a natural-looking nose that is proportionate to your face. On the day of surgery, your physician will likely draw small guidelines on or around your nose. Depending on your preferences and the extent of surgery being performed, your rhinoplasty will be performed under general anesthesia or a local sedative. If you are sedated, the nose and surrounding area are numb, but you are not fully asleep. Your incisions are typically closed with dissolvable stitches, and nasal airway splits are often placed inside the nose to help provide support as your nose heals. Bandages and splits outside the nose are also used to help the tissues heal and, if nasal bones were adjusted, conform the new cartilage and bone structure. As with any surgery, you may experience some pain, bruising and swelling around your nose and the upper portion of your face. To help with this, your physician often will prescribe a pain medication to keep you more comfortable as the healing process begins.
How Soon Will I See Nose Surgery Results?
Stitches, bandages and splits are typically removed within a week of surgery and most of the swelling will go down quickly. It is possible to see minor swelling around the nose for a few months, and it could take up to a full year before the final results are complete.
