What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or fat injection, is a technique in which fatty tissue is removed from one region of your body and injected into your facial area. Fat transfer is a type of soft tissue filler and is used to fill in lines and creases that develop as a result of age, gravity, smiling, squinting and chewing.

What to Expect from a Fat Transfer Procedure

In this procedure, the surgeon will use a local anesthetic to numb both the area where the fat will be harvested as well as the area to be treated. He will then remove the appropriate amount of fat (usually from the buttocks, abdomen or thigh) using a small cannula, or tube, so as not to damage the membrane of the fat cell. The fat is then purified to remove the surface oil and red blood cells. After that, the fat is injected under the wrinkle or crease, or within the muscle to increase the longevity of the fat graft.

Fat Transfer Results and Length of Procedure

This outpatient procedure usually takes about an hour, and you will need to take it easy for a few days while you recover. You will experience facial tightness and swelling, which will subside after 24-72 hours, but may take two to four weeks to completely go away. Though the results are not permanent, the effects are typically long-term, with some cases lasting up to three years.
